Projects

“Food4Everyone” is a group of friends and supporters who join forces in raising money and resources to help Cambodians living in extreme poverty.

We share a sense of global responsibility and strongly believe that together and bit by bit, we can make a big difference.

Our many programs in Cambodia are a testimony to our beliefs.

You are very welcome to join us in our efforts to break the cycle of poverty.

We know we can not change the world but now we can prove that with a little effort we can change a little bit of it.

FREEDOM FOOD PROJECT

Food4Everyone has assisted the prisoners of Kampong Cham Medium Security Jail to build a thriving garden which allows prisoners (who are rarely fed) to grow healthy fruit and vegetables. Food4Everyone supplied training and funds to construct a well, purchase seeds and all the tools necessary for this venture. Prisoners of the jail are now able to contribute part of their crops to other Food4Everyone food distribution programs.

We are very proud of this program because it meets all the vital, basic principles of effective rehabilitation programs. It provides training and transferable skills to people who do not have any, it gives them a sense of purpose, it develops their self-esteem by encouraging them to contribute to others and most basically it feeds them.

DIGNITY FOOD PROJECT

Food4Everyone supplies parcels of nutritious food to all 30 patients at the AIDS Ward
of the Kampong Cham Hospital twice per week. It is mostly women and children
who suffer from AIDS in Cambodia and these people are victimised because of the
stigmatisation surrounding HIV/AIDS. Hospitals do not provide food therefore they
rely entirely on their families however, as a result of their stigmatisation, they are rarely
ever fed and most of them rely entirely on Food4Everyone parcels for their survival. As
horrific as this may seem, the reality is that these people are not only fighting with the
horror of dying with AIDS but of doing so whilst starving.

Conditions are too deplorable for words. There are not even sufficient beds for the patients to
lie on or sufficient room to fit the limited beds they do have. As a consequence, some of
the patients have to sleep on the veranda. The conditions are filthy, the standard of hygiene
again is indescribable with only one toilet for the entire 30 patients and no washing facilities.

Conditions are so dismal in the AIDS ward that whenever we can,
Food4Everyone also distributes toothbrushes, soaps, etc because these are not provided.

FARMLET

Food4Everyone has been able to acquire its own land in the outskirts of Kampong
Cham, Cambodia. The farmlet is now complete with a variety of animals including
pigs, duck, goats, chickens and a cow as well as growing fruit and vegetables!
It has already started providing some of the food for the Windy Village Feeding Project!

The Food4Everyone farmlet provides the backdrop for a whole range of training initiatives where not only our students but the villagers participate. It also provides the prototype for the sound foundation of sustainable agricultural practices and self-operating programs to the local community.

SPONSORED STUDENTS

Food4Everyone sponsors three students at the Kampong Cham Agricultural College.
These students specialize in agriculture, animal husbandry as well as tree and plantation
studies. These students live in the caretakers cottage of the Food4Everyone Farmlet
and contribute their knowledge and experience.

Food4Everyone students also travel as part of the Poverty Aid team to isolated
poverty stricken parts of Cambodia to assess needs and to provide assistance.

RIVER FOOD AND AID RELIEF PROJECT

Food4Everyone supplies 32 families living in abject poverty in a slum area of the
Meekong River with weekly allocated rice portions, dried sausage, dried fish as
well as diet staples. All of the 32 families' houses are in an area which in
Australia would only fit one or two houses, the area is that tiny. These dwellings
house between six to ten people each. As the pictures show, these homes
would not even be considered shacks by Australian standards. To make matters
worse this slum gets flooded once per year and when this happens all these
people have to abandon their shacks and move up a hill to live on the roadside.
The horror of the situation can only be depicted by the pictures and by the
actual experience of being there. The reality is that dogs in Australia live a lot
better than these refugee families do in Cambodia.

POVERTY AID FOR CAMBODIA

Co-ordinated by Rinna Ly who has direct access and contact to the Sydney
Cambodian Community.

This project identifies and targets poverty spots in Cambodia. Projects involve the
construction of wells and toilets, food distribution, seed and tree planting projects
as well as providing clothing and mosquito nets. By December 2008, Poverty Aid 4 Cambodia
had constructed 45 wells all over rural Cambodia, including in schools.
This project has also provided crucial necessities such as
seeds, sarongs, scarves and mosquito nets, to hundreds of needy Cambodians.

TIMOR FIRST AID

"Food4Everyone" provides a "slush" fund for emergency situations in East Timor.

Centre 4 Hope

Our newest project, the Centre4Hope (C4H), is aimed at providing harm reducing aids and basic skills (numeracy/ literacy) to the disabled youth and children who unbelievably have to live and spend their days in the garbage dumps of Phnom Penh in order to survive. C4H provides a safe haven where the children are provided with safety packs (containing gloves, masks, tweezers, etc), basic food (such as soya milk, a steaming bowl of soup) as well as a safe and caring environment for them to rest, feel protected, receive first aid, have a sense of belonging and express themselves.

WINDY VILLAGE FEEDING PROJECT

Food4Everyone provides nutritious meals for 300 children, 30 elderly people as well as a
growing number of young mums and bubs three times per week in a little village (the
“Windy Village”) on the outskirts of Kampong Cham. This represents almost 30,000 meals
yearly in the Windy Village alone!
Guestimates suggest that 50% of Cambodians under the age of 10 are malnourished, not starving, but simply malnourished. It is now well understood that the consequences of malnourishment are cognitive impairment. In other words, Cambodian children’s brains will not grow or develop properly unless they eat well. Clearly, the long term result of this is that 50% of the country could potentially be inhabited by people with intellectual impairment. For 50 cents per day, Food4Everyone can stop this from happening. We believe we have a social and moral duty to do so if we possibly can, and we can.

This project is underlined by the basic principle that human beings have a basic right to eat
and this need has to be met first. In other words, we believe in "buying a man a rod and
teaching him to fish", but we just happen to believe that he will learn to fish a whole lot
better with a full tummy. Food4Everyone’s other programs are also underlined by the principle
of the right to education and training to break this cycle of poverty.
